The Kingdom
The Kingdom is the most technologically advanced hospital in Denmark, a gleaming bastion of medical science. A rash of uncanny occurrences, however, begins to weaken the staff's faith in science--a phantom ambulance pulls in every night, but disappears; voices echo in the elevator shaft; and a pregnant doctor's fetus seems to be developing much faster than is natural.

A Polish concentration camp survivor seeks Peter's help and so Peter gives Lyle the case to give him some more responsibility, to improve his self-esteem. Meanwhile Beatrice tries to bond with Gloria with 'fun' activities. Snell has a a dream about finding his fortune and goes looking for it. Peter gets ready to judge a rude vegetable competition and Mrs. Thing is persuaded to leave her money to the church.

Peter Kingdom, a solicitor in Norfolk market town, returns to work, following the disappearance of his brother, Simon. Simon's clothes were found on the beach, but no body was discovered. Peter helps settle the affairs of a deceased woman whose money has disappeared and helps Mr Snell stop the council building a road.
