If we want to categorise the best aspects of Star Trek we would say it deals with issues yet leaves the interpretation open. Star Trek can have episodes like Far Beyond the Stars or Past Tense that challenge how we see our reality, and Star Trek can do that with impunity because it's a made up future reality. It's better than our reality, because people have consciences forged of duranium, tempered by the made up prime directive, and they care about one another; yet it's not an unrecognisable reality. We could all be like that if we tried. We could be better people, more like Benjamin Sisko, if we want to.

DS9 was wonderful TV. I saw some but not all of them when they first came out. I rediscovered my love of Star Trek through this series a couple of years ago. It's actually better than I remembered. This show is better than Battlestar Galactica, the new standard in sci fi (or syfy or whatever ...) because it's totally compelling through the characters. They're rich and developed, every scene is tense and full of story, (albeit in a different less 2000's influenced way than galactica) but every moment is really fun too. Have we lost that in sci fi? Can we have a bright vision of the future in sci fi again? Many say that the new Star Trek movie has restored fun to Sci Fi, but to me that fun has come at the price of the authenticity of Star Trek. Here's hoping for a new Star Trek series, and for my part I hope it's not one set in the new "alternate universe." Canon is there for a purpose.
