Mary Mary Quite Contrary walks along Sesame Street and dumps a pile of dirt outside Oscar's trashcan. Gordon explains that she can not leave the dirt, she is making a mess! Mary Mary insists that she is going to grow a garden with silver bells and cockle shells. Gordon tries to tell her that silver bells and cockleshells aren't alive. Gardens need to have things growing in them, like vegetables, fruits or flowers. Mary Mary decides she will grow flowers in her garden by using dirt, sun, and water. Later, Alan and Gina walk by Oscar's trashcan and comment on the beautiful garden. But Oscar doesn't like it! He wants Mary Mary to move her garden. As Mary Mary plants more flowers, Oscar decides to have his elephant, Fluffy squirt water at her. Maybe that will get her to move? But as Mary Mary explains, the water helps her flowers to grow. Oscar doesn't know what to do! He sends over Hairy Hairy, from the grouch nursery rhyme, with stinky weeds and moldy seeds and three pigs, but even that doesn't get rid of Mary Mary and her garden. Suddenly, Oscar changes his mind. He likes the horrible smell from the stinky weeds and loud noises from the pigs. It's a grouch paradise! Mary Mary finds this out and decides to move the garden. She likes to be contrary and do the opposite of whatever anyone wants her to do. Mary Mary moves her garden while Gordon happily cleans up the remaining dirt!

Elmo and Leela are in the Laundromat when they hear a loud, clanging sound. Leela explains that the washing machine always gives her trouble and she wants to get rid of it, but Elmo insists that she keep it. Leela asks Luis to try to fix it again. When he arrives, he asks Elmo to find a wrench in his tool box. After a few tries, Elmo finally finds a wrench. Luis opens the lid of the machine to see if it is fixed but it squirts water in his face! Luis decides he needs to put in a new nut in the shape of a hexagon. Elmo finds a nut but it only has four sides. He looks again and finds one with six sides! A hexagon! Luis tightens the nut and tries the machine again. It starts to bang, clang, and hiccup louder than ever! Suddenly, the machine starts to move! Luis suggests that something might be stuck in the spin basket. He opens it and pulls out different objects as Elmo adds them up- seven objects all together! Luis throws in clothes and detergent to see if the machine works. All of a sudden, the machine lid explodes spewing clothes and soap everywhere! Now Leela really wants to get rid of the machine, but Elmo insists they keep it and reuse it for another purpose. But for what? Oscar announces that he thinks it's the greatest machine ever! That's it! The machine can be reused as a Grouch's Messing Machine! All the grouches come running to take turns messing up their clothes. It's a grouch dream machine!

Bert's Pigeon Search. Episode 4221

Elmo wants to be just like Gordon so he has decided to spend the day looking and acting just like him. First Elmo reads the paper just like Gordon, but he becomes bored of this. He asks if he can do more things like Gordon such as the Chicken Dance. Gordon wasn't planning on doing the Chicken Dance, so Elmo and a group of chickens, who also look just like Gordon, show him how they think Gordon would do it. Afterwards Big Bird asks Gordon to read him "Humpty Dumpty". Since Elmo wants to be just like Gordon, he wants to read the book to Big Bird. Unfortunately Elmo can't read, yet. So instead, Elmo listens to Gordon read so that one day he will be able to read just like him. Gordon reads the story so well that Humpty Dumpty, the King's Horses, and the King's Men all come out dressed like Gordon because they want to be just like him, too! Gordon didn't know it was so much fun being himself.

Chris and Alan become the judges of the Sesame Street Bird Games. This is where birds of all feathers compete in exciting bird events. Big Bird, a duck and a chicken are the contestants. The first event is the Square Meal Peck where each bird must make a square out of bird seed. The duck wins by making the perfect shape with four equal sides. The Thirty-second Egg Lay is the next event. The chicken is the only bird who can actually lay an egg, so the chicken wins. Next, there's the Rhyming Competition, which Big Bird wins. The scores are now tied- one point for each bird. The Bird Dance Competition is the final event and whoever wins this will have two points and win the grand prize. Each bird must do a dance that shows what if feels like to be a bird. All of them dance so "birdy" in their own birdish way that Alan and Chris decide that Big Bird, the chicken and the duck all win! The grand prize is ten pounds of birdseed which they all feast on together.

Grouchy Mother's Day. Episode 4237

Chris is reading Abby a story about a princess who kisses a frog and turns him into a prince. Now Abby thinks that someone on Sesame Street could be an enchanted prince and she thinks that someone could be Oscar. After all, he's green like a frog and no one could really be that grouchy. Unless he's a prince who was turned into a grouch. Now Abby believes that a kiss will break the spell and turn him back to Prince Oscar. Oscar keeps telling her that he is a Grouch, but she is not convinced. She keeps trying to kiss him and even chases him down into his can. Oscar asks Chris to give him a disguise so Abby won't know it's him, but Abby isn't fooled. Chris comes up with the idea that Oscar should just allow Abby to kiss him in order to prove that he is not a prince. In the end, Abby discovers that Oscar is just Oscar and he just want to be himself. Abby doesn't care that he's not a prince, she loves him just the way he is!

Gabi is reading Elmo a book called Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs because Elmo loves dinosaurs! When Gabi has to leave to go to class, Elmo imagines himself with a pet dinosaur and sings a song about all the fun things they would do together. Elmo decides to ask Gina where he might find a pet dinosaur. Gina tells Elmo that dinosaurs are extinct and explains that dinosaurs lived a very long time ago, but there aren't anymore left anywhere. Snuffy finds Elmo upset and asks him what is wrong. When Elmo explains how he really wanted a pet dinosaur, Snuffy has an idea. He comes back dressed in a dinosaur costume pretending to be a Shaggy Snufflesaurus and looking to be someone's pet. Elmo gets very excited. They sing a song about all the fun things they will do together and leave to go on a walk. This dinosaur needs lots of exercise, as well as cabbage and spaghetti.

Everyone is gathered to watch the Worm Cup on TV, which is when worms come from all over the world to try and kick a ball into a cup. This year Slimey, from Sesame Street, is a finalist competing against Squirmadene, from France. Squirmadene kicks the ball and Slimey tries to block it, but it is too high for Slimey to reach. Slimey is just about to take his turn when Squirmadene whispers, "Nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!" This is teasing and against Worm Cup rules, but the referee decides to let Squirmadene off with a warning. It has come down to Slimey, who uses his special scrunch kick to kick the ball into the cup. The crowd goes wild thinking Slimey won, but the ball bounces back out of the cup! Slimey is very upset and to make matters worse, Squirmadene teases him again. Slimey shakes with rage and pushes Squirmadene with his head. Slimey is thrown out of the game. Oscar tells Slimey that no matter how angry he is he should always use his words and never hurt another worm. Slimey tells Squirmadene he is sorry, but explains he doesn't like to be teased. Squirmadene apologizes too, and in a show of good sportsmanship they share the Worm Cup!

Rosita, Telly and Zoe play house and pretend to be a happy family with a happy mommy, daddy, baby and dog! When they decide to do their happy chores they have trouble agreeing on who gets to pretend to be the lamp, and who gets to dust it! Then they have trouble deciding who gets to pretend to be the vacuum and who gets to use it! Finally, they can't agree on who gets to drive the pretend happy car or where they are going! They become frustrated and decide that they don't want to play happy family anymore. How can they be a happy family when they are not happy all the time? Alan tells them they don't need to be happy all the time to be a family. They can be unhappy or even angry at times. The important part is that they work their problems out together. So, this is just what they do. They decide to have Alan drive the pretend car to a place that includes something everyone would like!

Zoe and Abby are having a dancing playdate. Abby tries Zoe's tutu on and Zoe gives Abby's wand a try. As Zoe waves Abby's wand, she says, "If I were a fairy godmother and had a wand like this . . . I'd say, 'I wish that everyone today . . . Would wear a tutu and dance ballet!" Without Zoe and Abby realizing it, Zoe's wish comes true! First a penguin wearing a tutu appears and then the mailman. Eventually everyone on Sesame Street is wearing a tutu and dancing ballet! Chaos ensues because everyone has work to do, but they can't get it done while they're dancing! Zoe realizes that she has turn everything back to normal and Abby remembers just how to do it. They need to think of a word that rhymes with "stop!" Chris dances by with a mop in a tutu, and it gives Zoe an idea. She waves the wand and says, "Chris is dancing with a mop . . . But now it's time for the dancing to stop!" Her rhyme successfully stops the spell, all the tutus disappear and everyone can get back to work!

First, Cookie Monster is upset when his cookie breaks in half, but thanks to Oscar, he realizes that he now has 2 half cookies. Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty are playing checkers when Sleeping Beauty falls asleep right in the middle of their game. Prince Charming is feeling frustrated, but Oscar unknowingly gives him a great idea, a kiss could wake her up. Sleeping Beauty thanks Oscar with a big kiss of his own. Now Oscar’s really losing his grouchy viewers. There has been an elephant stuck in Maria’s bathtub all day, which could just be the kind of grouchy news him and his viewers need. Bob happened to be watching the Grouch News Network, and came to the rescue with a bag of peanuts to get the elephant out! Oscar’s show is ruined. Lucky for him, it’s so nice, happy and sweet that it’s aggravating! The grouches love it and Oscar wins a Phlemmy Award.

Rosita and Zoe are both excited about their play date together. As they start to play hide-and-seek, Abby Cadabby poofs up out of nowhere. Rosita is about to show Abby how they play hide-and-seek, but Abby mentions another game, "Jumping Rhymes", which piques Zoe's interests. Zoe and Abby are good at the game, but Rosita has trouble thinking of words that rhyme with "chair," and can only think of made-up words. Rosita insists they play hide-and-seek next, and tells Abby how to play it. Zoe and Abby hide while Rosita counts. While they hide, Abby is impressed by Zoe's tutu, and asks Zoe to teach her how to dance ballet. Rosita finishes counting and is about to look for them, when she encounters them both dancing ballet instead of hiding. She runs off, frustrated and angry.Meanwhile, at the Fix-it Shop, an anxious rabbit desperately needs his teapot fixed for a tea party. He realizes he's late, and runs off. Just then, Rosita shows up and tells Maria and Gabi how angry she feels at Zoe and Abby. Maria tells her to take a deep breath, which helps a little. Zoe and Abby catch up with Rosita and ask her what happened. Rosita is so angry she can only express her feelings in Spanish at first, but Zoe realizes how angry she is. They reassure her that they do want to play with her, even though they got distracted by ballet earlier. They all agree to take turns choosing what to play, and Rosita asks for her turn to choose hide-and-seek. They're all friends again! The monsters (and fairy) run off to play hide-and-seek, but the rabbit comes back to remind Maria and Gabi that they have a teapot to fix ...

Elmo is excited to play checkers with Gina, but they only get to play one turn because she has to go feed Marco. This leaves Elmo feeling jealous and upset. When Gina returns from feeding Marco, she finds Elmo sitting in Marco’s stroller, pretending to be a baby himself! Gina plays along, but wishes Elmo could be himself again so they can play their game. She explains that she has enough love for both Marco and Elmo and she’ll always make special time to be together. While Marco still needs to be taken care of, Elmo can teach Marco lots of new things and when he’s old enough, they can play together and be friends.

Zoe and Rosita find Abby’s magic wand and Rosita wonders what it would be like to be a fairy god-monster and do magic. She even convinces Zoe that they could help Maria with all her work by using Abby’s wand. To do magic, all they have to say is some words that rhyme. When the sparkles clear, Maria is gone and a chicken is there in her place. Something went terribly wrong and now they have to figure out how to change Maria back. First they try saying another rhyme, and then a rhyme in Spanish while hopping at the same time, but things only seem to be getting worse. When Abby comes to find her wand, Rosita tells her what she had done and that they need Abby’s help. Abby has been getting better at her magic rhymes so she tries to change Maria back, but now Maria’s a clucking pumpkin! To everyone’s surprise, Maria shows up out of nowhere. It turns out that she was in the hardware store. The pumpkin sounds awfully like Mrs. Chicken, though, who was coming to pick up her toaster from the Fix It Shop. Good thing Abby’s mommy could help fix everything!

Telly finds Gordon practicing outside for a game of golf he is going to play with Alan. When Telly learns how golf is played, he decides that if Gordon really wants to practice he should do it as if he were on a real golf course. When Gordon tells him a real golf course can have hills in it, Telly thinks of a way to make hills. After considering using a turkey sandwich, which would be too flat, or a basketball, which might roll away, he finally comes up with the idea of using pillows. When Gordon tells him a real golf course can have water hazards, Telly decides to borrow Bert and Ernie’s wading pool. When Gordon tells him there could be sand traps, Telly asks two children to bring over some buckets of sand. Gordon diligently practices under all these conditions when Alan arrives and says that, according to the weather report, it is going to be really windy. Telly has the solution- a large fan. By now a crowd has gathered to cheer Gordon on, and the ball goes in! Thanks to Telly, Gordon is definitely ready for a real round of golf on a real golf course!

The three friends decide to explain their predicament to Gabi. Gabi suggests they sing a song about the number three, but they don’t know a song about three. As they are trying to figure out a song, Abby says it’s too bad they can’t come up with a song of their own… but maybe they can! With Elmo and Abby’s encouragement, Big Bird starts the song. "You and you and me . . . one, two, three!" Elmo and Abby catch on and happily join in until a little boy comes along and they now have to think of a song about the number four!

Rosita receives a card from her grandmother in the mail. Abby is very impressed because she has never received a letter before. Elmo decides to write Abby her first letter. Elmo gets ready with some paper and crayons, but then he remembers he doesn't know how to write! Chris helps by listening to what Elmo wants to say and writing it down for him. After Chris reads Elmo’s letter back to him, Elmo decides to end it with, "Love, Elmo" and realizes there is one word he can write, his name! Chris addresses an envelope, puts a stamp on it and puts Elmo's letter inside. They can now put the letter in the mailbox and the mail carrier will get it and bring it to Abby in a few days. Just then, Abby poofs back to Sesame Street. Elmo excitedly tells her that he wrote her a letter. Both of them want Abby to get her letter right then, so Chris hands Abby the envelope. Abby is so excited about receiving her very first letter that she forgets she doesn't know how to read yet! Chris helps her read Elmo's letter and she couldn't be happier. Abby now can’t wait to write her first letter and she thinks she’ll write one to Elmo thanking him.

Prairie Dawn, the Fairy Tale News reporter, is here to ask, "How can you prepare for an emergency?" Fairy Tales are full of them, so who better to interview first than the Three Little Pigs. They are preparing for the Big Bad Wolf since you never know when he'll show up to blow your house in. Good thing one of the pigs has a Big Bad Wolf Emergency Kit full of bricks to build his house. His preparation paid off and his brick house is still standing. Prairie Dawn then interviews Sleeping Beauty who is preparing for a falling asleep emergency. If the Prince isn't around to kiss her and wake her up, she could sleep through everything. She has prepared a Sleeping Beauty Emergency Wake-Up Kit which includes an alarm clock, as well as a back up rooster who has also had bugle lessons just in case. Baby Bear is also prepared for a home invasion from Goldilocks. He invented a Porridge Detector Protector and it really works! Hopefully Prairie's special presentation will help all fairy tale characters prepare for their emergencies.

Telly invites Baby Bear to the Triangle Lover’s meeting so his best friend can be there when he gets crowned Triangle Lover of the Day. The meeting begins with the building of the triangle in the same way they always do it. Baby Bear asks if they ever considered putting it together in a different order. As he demonstrates, the triangle lovers learn that it doesn’t matter at all. As long as it has three sides and three corners, a triangle is a triangle! Upon hearing the Triangle Lover’s Anthem, Baby Bear suggests a new rhyme to end the song. The Grand High Triangle Lover likes the idea and agrees to the change! Now when Baby Bear hears the Triangle Lovers’ Cheer, he can’t help but think of a great way to improve that too. The time has finally come to crown the Triangle Lover of the Day and the decision is for it to be Baby Bear, not Telly! Telly is so upset, but Baby Bear helps Telly feel better by reminding him that he may win the crown at the next meeting.

Elmo lets Big Bird ride his tricycle, but as soon as Big Bird sits down on it, it breaks! Elmo is sad about his broken tricycle and Big Bird feels bad because he didn’t mean to break it. Gordon helps them both feel better by reminding them that they can take the broken tricycle to the Fix-It Shop! Elmo, Big Bird and Gordon carry the broken tricycle to the Fix-It Shop, but Maria is busy with another customer and can’t help them right away. Elmo and Big Bird try to think of what they can do while they wait, but all they can think about is how much they both wish Elmo could be riding his tricycle. As Elmo talks, Big Bird motions as if he were riding a pretend tricycle. This gives Elmo the idea to begin riding a pretend tricycle, too. They sing a song about their imaginary rides, describing all that they see and all they can do. Pretend tricycles are lots of fun because they can ride them anywhere their imagination takes them, even under the sea! Elmo has so much fun riding his pretend tricycle with Big Bird that when his real tricycle is fixed, he decides to keep playing with Big Bird.

Elmo is in love with his favorite book, Lucy the Lazy Lizard. He loves it so much that he asks Maria to read it to him again for the 11th time that morning. She agrees and reads the story of Lucy the Lazy Lizard who lounged lazily on her lovely little log when a long, loud train came lumbering down the tracks heading straight for her.This is Elmo’s favorite part. Lucy is luckily the strongest lizard in Lackawanna, and she lifts the tracks over her head at the last minute so that the train passes right over. That was close. Now who can Elmo find to read him the story again? He comes upon Telly who is playing with his train set. There’s no time though because the Triangle Express has to get triangles to Tuscaloosa. But wait, the triangles have already gone to Tuscaloosa! This gives Elmo an idea- maybe the triangles could go to Lackawanna instead. Telly loves this idea because who doesn’t need triangles in Lackawanna. Elmo goes on to tell his favorite story about Lucy as Telly excitedly acts it out with his train set.

Gordon and Susan’s nephew, Chris Robinson, just moved to Sesame Street. He is looking for a job in the Help Wanted section of the newspaper because he needs money to buy books for school. Chris thinks the first ad might be for a job as a gym teacher because it reads, "Must love to exercise." When he reports to the Count who placed the ad, he discovers that instead of teaching children how to exercise, the Count wants Chris to do exercises so that the Count can count them! The second ad Chris follows is for a sales job, selling cookies for Cookie Monster, but Cookie Monster can not part with his cookies. Next, Chris follows an ad to be a dance partner with Horatio Elephant, but that job is for peanuts, not real money. Chris is just about to give up when he sees a "Help Wanted" sign hanging in Hooper's Store window. He meets Alan, who tells him he needs help stocking shelves, working the register, and sweeping up.

Oscar tries a cherry on top of his chocolate ice cream with fish, saukraut, and marshmallows, Gordon tries sushi, Elmo and Zoe try asparagus, and Cookie Monster tries celery. The only one who hasn't tried something new, yet, is Telly. He is a little apprehensive because he always has his grilled cheese sandwich cut into triangles. But what if it was cut into squares instead? To his surprise squares are as yummy as triangles. Now everyone has tried something new today, even your On-The-Spot Reporter.

She suggests that they think like babies to come up with games that everyone can play together. Big Bird and Snuffy remember playing peek-a-boo, singing songs, and guessing animal sounds. They have so much fun on their playdate, but now they are ready to take naps. Snuffy and Big Bird can really think like babies, after all.

This doesn't stop Elmo and Big Bird from wanting to teach the baby the alphabet or stop Telly from giving the baby a triangle lover's test. Finally, all of the helpers leave and Gina has some time alone with her baby. She is extremely happy to be a mommy now and to take care of her new family. Everyone returns and Gina realizes that she is going to need all the help that she can get. She is very grateful that everyone cares so much!

There is a veterinarian covering for her in case any animals need help, and Luis and Gordon are setting up the baby's crib. Big Bird, Elmo, Baby Bear and Rosita have noticed all of the excitement, but they don't know what it means to adopt a baby. Gina explains that there is a baby that needs love and caring for and she wants to be the person to provide those things. They all can't wait to meet the new baby and help in any way they can. The next time they see Gina, she will be a mommy and she will have a new family!

Prairie Dawn and the gang are putting on a "Healthy Food Pageant." Prairie plays the piano while everyone else dresses up like different foods and sings about the foods' health benefits. Zoe sings about potatoes and Rosita sings about tortillas. Telly is just about to go on as an asparagus, but he just isn't feeling the part. His problem is that he has never tasted an asparagus, so how can he sing about one. Telly tries it, loves it and goes on stage to tell everyone. Another problem arises right before Elmo is about to make his broccoli debut- he can't find his costume! Gabi helps Elmo think about and remember all the places that he might have left it. Finally, Elmo does remember and he makes it on stage. They perform a wonderful pageant and everyone has learned how to stay strong and healthy every day!

Baby Bear is writing a thrilling story about the Three Bears. With the help of Elmo, he decides the story should be "The Three Bears in Outer Space." In the beginning of the story, the Three Astro Bears are trying to find the answer to the question, "How does porridge taste in space?" The middle includes a cowgirl, recommended by Zoe. Then the ship starts to shake. Big Bird thinks that this could only be a tap dancing chicken, but how will the story end? Baby Astro Bear politely asks the chicken to stop tap dancing. The Three Astro Bears finally get to find out how porridge tastes in space. It tastes just right, and they live happily ever after. Baby Bear and his friends think that this was the greatest story ever told, and they all helped to write it together!

Big Bird realizes how important the adults are to Sesame Street and how much people count on them. He wishes for Alan, Maria, and Gordon to be adults again, so they can return to their responsibilities. Alan, Maria, and Gordon had so much fun, though, that they realize that it is also really important to play and to make time for the kids in their lives.

Maria tries to get Oscar to name words that start with the letter "B", Alan has Oscar play "One of These Things is Not Like the Other", and Baby Bear pretends that Telly, who is dressed up like a button, can't remember who he is. Oscar thinks he can't be fooled, but he does finally whisper the answer. To Oscar's dismay, Telly hears him. Telly couldn't be happier that someone asked and Oscar finally answered!

Next the H-Man pops in and wants everyone to play "The Sound of H." Maria and Luis decide to join in, but while the others are still hopping along with the hopping honkers, they manage to sneak away again. At last they are going to have their picnic. This is until its time for the letter "H" dance, which just happens to be Luis and Maria's favorite dance which they did on their honeymoon- "The Hula." Then Herb gets to do something that he has never done before, but has always wanted to. He gets to play with a worm! There was also a cupboard full of art supplies. They sang the alphabet song and drew pictures of things they loved. They also both wanted to play with a fire truck at the same time. This taught them about sharing and how it is an important part of being in school. They shared their first day and now they will be sharing graduation. Elmo thinks that the class would love to see her wand. As he says this, he accidentally taps his head with her wand and he disappears, suddenly appearing at Abby's school. Now that Elmo is at her school, Abby thinks that it would be more fun to introduce Elmo to the class during show-and-tell. Then she can tell everyone what a good friend he is. Previously, Big Bird was accidentally changed into little Big Bird when Mumford tried to do a magic trick. On his very long and slow trip, a ladybug named Mike crash lands right into him. He teaches little Big Bird that he has to keep trying no matter what obstacles he faces and what size he is. Little Big Bird remembers to believe in himself and with a little persistence, he finally makes it! Once he is finally noticed, Mumford is able to turn little Big Bird back into big Big Bird. Oscar and Grundgetta are too busy arguing and the other grouches have already been fired. Grump decides that even though Elmo succeeded at all the tasks, he is too good at being a helper to help a grouch. Elmo doesn't mind. He gets to leave with the one thing he wanted anyway - Grump's hairpiece. Grundgetta and Oscar are both hired, but they decide that Grump's trash isn't worth it if they have to help him to get it. He starts to fly up to the sky going higher and higher. While Snuffy is happy to be seeing birds and other clouds, he starts to get cold and lonely being all by himself. Snuffy wishes to go back down, and his wish is granted. He realizes that everyone he loves is down on Sesame Street and that he would rather be a snuffleupagus than a cloud any day.
