The designers had 30 minutes and 150 dollars to complete their design and another two days to finish up the actual garmet. The winning design was decided by the judges and guest judges Anne Slowey and Sasha Cohen. The winning outfit will be worn by Cohen during an upcoming skating event. The losing designer was told they were "OUT" You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? There is a lot of pieces in the retail sphere that promises to be transitive, but really it doesn't work well. Hence, the idea for the challenge. At their meeting with Deborah Lloyd from Banana Republic, the designers were given the full run of the spring 2006 fabrics to choose from for their designs. Once in the workroom after finishing their sketches for the challenge the designers are surprised to learn that they will have to work in teams of two. The teams will have to share leadership, and had 60 seconds to pair themselves up. Sense they are to make only one outfit they either had to make a new sketch, combine the two together or chose one or the other, as well they had to chose which model to use. After the teams are done with there designs they were each assigned a storefront window to showcase their day/evening outfits. The teams are in charge of customizing a theme for the windows to go with their designs. The models acted as living mannequins to show their outfits. In still another surprise people on the streets passing by will rate the window displays as to whose they like the best. Tim added a little more anxiety to the room when he revealed that both people in the winning team would win, but in the like, both people on the losing team would be OUT! You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? Andrae and Daniel are the winners and Diana and Marla are Out.

Social Scene

This challenge was designed for one of America's hottest socialites: Nicky Hilton. In the world of fashion, socialites make important clients because they wear high fashion, and wear it in the public eye for all to see. Socialites are a different client then red carpet goers in entertainment because they tend to more conservative. As a leader in the younger socialite world, Nicky Hilton is being groomed for greatness, so her every step must be thoughtful and strategic. Nicky is the perfect person for a challenge for designing a social outfit. The designers will to make a dress that will walk down the runway for Nicky herself to judge which one is her favorite. Luckily for the designers they get to pass some of their extra time at a party thrown for the desiners and Nicky Hilton. They can use this time to make an imporession on her, and get to know her and her taste, style and preferences. The designers have 30 minutes to sketch, 30 minutes to shop, and until sometime tomorrow to finish this design before the runway. You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? The designers learn that they each have to develop a presentation for a lingerie collection, that they will have to present to Heidi in 30. Based on those interviews Heidi sees each outfit and is able to ask any question she might have. In the end she picks the the 4 she feels best represents her. Those team leaders each take turns composing their team by choosing among the remaining designers. Each team is then responsible for executing the team leader's vision. After the selections, each team receives $200 for materials and one day (twelve hours) to complete the collection. The designers have learned to expect a twist, this week is no different. This week's challenge is to design a dress for the host of Access Hollywood , Nancy O’Dell . Nancy will help judge the runway and wear the winning design on the red carpet at the 2005 Grammy Awards. The designers get a chance to meet Nancy as she answers questions about what her preference and needs are. Another surprise is the help they get from eliminated designer Rob. With $300 to spend, the designers get busy at the fabric shop. Austin grabs a mix of soft blues and purples. Jay attempts combine his own preference with Nancy's needs and wishes. Austin commits to a loose, glamorous-but-sexy evening gown, while Wendy goes with short and sexy. Kara plays to Nancy's fondness for two-piece outfits, with a draping shirt over leather pant. Instead of another assignment, Heidi gives the five finalists each brown paper packages containing the key to their next challenge, which they are not allowed to open until the next morning. Before the sun is up, the designers discover that their packages contain U.S. Postal Service uniforms for them to wear for the day. At the Hoboken, N.J. Post Office branch, Tim unveils the challenge: redesign the letter carrier's uniform, after spending the morning on a route to understand exactly what is needed to make the uniforms more hip, while being functional. On their appointed rounds, they experience the woes of polyester pants and broken-down carts. Armed with their first-hand experience and $100, the designers hit the fabric store, finding everything blue and breathable in sight. When Jay learns his model will not be arriving, he finds the only other person that could possibly fit into the design he has created for a model… Austin of course! Heidi announces the next challenge: as one group, the designers will create a collection, one carrying the theme "the year 2055”. One designer is to lead, taking responsibility for the overall vision, while each will designer will sketch and create an outfit of his or her own for the line. The designers are to build their collection only using items from at a vintage store. By lottery, Kevin will lead the team. The team decides that deconstruction will be the technique used to make their vintage elements seem more contemporary. A palette of tan, khaki, peach and brown will provide chromatic consistency. This next assignment goes a direction not yet seen in this competition. The designers will be designing swimsuits that are functional enough to swim in the pool, yet sophisticated enough to wear to a fashion-industry party. When time is up only 5 hours later, work stops and Tim informs the designers of the surprise for this week's challenge: they're on their way to an Elle magazine party where they will have time to schmooze with Richard Johnson -- the New York Post’s "Page Six" columnist. The designers who impresses him most with personality and design will get mentioned in his column and win the challenge. Before the parying can begin though, the models must be convinced to wear some of the designs that they think are too revealing. You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? When the designers selected their models this week, they didn’t realize that they were also choosing their next client. The challenge: to design a wedding dress for the model they have selected. Having seen Morgan drive other designers to distraction, Jay wonders if he hasn't made a fatal choice when he realized how pivotal Morgan, his choice in model this week will be in his performance in this challenge. With only two days to work, and $300, the designers are off to work. A few of the models decide to check in, some with boyfriends, putting all the more pressure on our designers. With picky clients the designers are fighting the clock and in some cases their own better judgment as the runway approaches, everyone steels themselves for a tough runway. Which designer will be left at Project Runway's altar? You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? For the next challenge, our designers meet Sarah Hudson, a rising rock star looking for a new look. The designers will be judged on the entire look, hair and makeup. In pure Project Runway style there is a twist. Only three designers will get to see their designs on the runway. Sarah will chose three concepts she likes best out of the nine presented to her, the designers whose concept she designs will them choose a team from the other designers to help them pull of their idea. The teams end up being 1) Kevin, Nora and Alexandra 2) Jay Kara and Rob and finally 3) Austin Wendy and Vanessa with the leaders being Jay, Austin and Kevin. The designers meet with Heidi at Banana Republic studios where they find out what the new challenge is: design a holiday dress that fits in with Banana Republic's current collection in one of the two themes. 1)"my grandmother's attic" in soft pinks and yellows, and 2)"Art Deco," in black, white and silver. Tim arrives to “up the ante” when he announces that the winning design will be sold online and in select stores nationwide, as part of Banana Republic's winter line. Jay takes inspiration from a photo of the Chrysler building, while Austin goes with the flowery soft dress. The morning before the runway, Kara tries to help Wendy reverse her fortunes with a home makeover. You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? As a treat of simplicity the challenge seems simple enough - make an outfit out of cotton and no food has to be used! However the task dose have a small twist to it. The design must elude the designers impression of Envy. It turns out that envy doesn't conjure up the same ideas in everyone. Vanessa evokes baby-envy, while Nora goes abstract, placing strategic cutouts revealing areas of body envy. Thinking of her father's career in the Air Force, Kara creates a personal military-inspired gown connecting the dots from envy and war. For Starr, envy is like an unhealthy growth, and Jay goes for social commentary, emblazoned with envious phrases. Surprised that they are not headed for the runway instead ending at a down town store. Fashion is more then sewing clothes and loving what you do, it can't be a careen until someone is buying it. Which makes this business aspect of the competition just what they need. The designers will have to "sell their vision" to the most fashionable people in New York. During a silent auction, the designer whose garment earns the highest bid will win the challenge; the rest will be judged on the runway, and one will be eliminated.
