In 2075, space debris has become an extreme hazard to the development of space. Derelict satellites, jettisoned fuel tanks and even fragmented bolts traveling at high speeds around the planet can cause massive damage if they collide with spacecraft. Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino works as a debris collector for one of the many corporations commercializing space. However, despite the importance and dangers of controlling debris, it still amounts to being a garbage man and Hachimaki's status is equivalent. Planetes is the story about the life of Hachimaki and those of his co-workers as they make a living in this futuristic and yet familiar time.
