Based on the hit 1980 musical motion picture of the same name, Fame focuses on the students and faculty at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. The hour-long show followed the dreams of young singers, actors, and musicians as they faced growing up and new life experiences, all while finishing art school in an effort to become rich and famous. Featuring an infectious theme song sung by Irene Cara, Fame stars Debbie Allen, Olivia Barash, Jesse Borrego, Michael Cerveris, Erica Gimpel, and others. Bonus points for spotting a young Janet Jackson.

      A Special Place

      aired: Wed, May 5, 1982

      A climate of fear grips the teachers when once again a team of inspectors descends upon the School of Arts to determine which of the instructors can be eliminated to cut costs. When the chief inspector informs Miss Sherwood that the choice is between Crandall and herself, he dangles the promise of continued employment in return for her favors--an offer she resoundingly refuses However, when the announcement is made, it is Crandall who is out. Incensed, the teachers propose a salary cut to retain the teacher while the students put on a massive production showing their support. Moved by this groundswell of devotion, the board decides to cut the budget in other areas in order to retain the beloved instructor.

      Reunions

      Shorofsky's (ALBERT HAGUE) normally aloof demeanor crumbles when a figure from his past -- an old flame he left behind in Germany before the war -- turns up in New York. At first unable to see her because of his guilt feelings, he finally agrees to meet with her after she shows up in his classroom. Their reunion is bittersweet, as he realizes the affections they felt for one another are forever altered by their past experiences and cannot be rekindled.

      A Big Finish

      School of the Art's janitor, Tim O'Bannon, has two secrets, the first being that he is an ex-vaudeville dancer, the second being that his long-time friend and professional rival Birdie Wheelan, is living in the maintenance room after being evicted from his apartment. The kids discover the "lodger," but rather than turn him in, they befriend him, seeing in both men the fulfillment of the qualities they are learning in school. The administration soon gets wind of the unauthorized guest, and orders him out. Not wanting to see their new friend homeless, the kids organize a benefit which not only raises enough money to send Birdie to Florida, but reteams the hoofers in a touching number.

      A Musical Bridge

      Leroy (GENE ANTHONY RAY) openly challenges the school system with his antagonistic attitudes to all academics. Confronted with losing control of the class as well as her inability to reach Leroy as a student, Ms. Sherwood (CAROL MAYO JENKINS) discovers a shattering secret when she attempts to contact his parents before the situation reaches a crisis stage.Student-teacher differences also arise between Bruno (LEE CURRERI) and his mentor, Shorofsky (ALBERT HAGUE) when the lure of a recording contract momentarily detracts from studies which promise a more rewarding musical career.

      Julie (LORI SINGER) develops a serious crush on a handsome college- aged student teacher, who is also an aspiring journalist. He encourages the budding romance, and compounds the lapse in ethics by using the relationship to search for compromising details to flesh out and expose he plans to publish on the school. Unable to find any scandals, large or small, he fabricates wild stories guaranteed to make sizzling copy. Julie discovers the man's treachery and skillfully neutralizes his unscrupulous intentions by threatening to expose his unorthodox tactics.

      The Crazies

      The end of the acedemic year at the School of the Arts ushers in a condition known as "the crazies" where the normal fabric of order begins to unravel, and students and teachers begin behaving--crazy. Doris(VALERIE LANDSBURG) and Montgomery (P.R. PAUL) agree to tell the truth for one whole day, no matter how painful, but the only ones to get hurt are the other students. Lydia (DEBBIE ALLEN) and Miss Sherwood (CAROL MAYO JENKINS) exchange testy words and then exchange classes; and on a darker note, Mr Shorofsky (ALBERT HAGUE) is hospitalized after surprising a robber in the school office. The darkness soon lifts because the indomitable professor does not suffer confinement well, and at the first opportunity manages to check himself out of the hospital, just in time for the Faculty Show.

      Come One, Come All

      Montgomery's (P.R. PAUL) already strained relationship with his mother, aging actress Melinda MacNeil, nears the breaking point when she steps in as director of the Parent's Night show. Montgomery's irritation stems from his perception that she is using the show as an attempt to display her youth to casting agents and producers, not to showcase the talents of the students. By the end of the presentation, Melinda faces the bitter reality that she can no longer play the youthful ingnue, but must now take older roles. Montgomery also swallows his resentment that her career has taken precedent over his upbringing, and comes to accept her as the woman she is instead of the mother she wasn't.

      Danny's father does not agree with his choice of being a comedian. Danny decides to go through with his plan and gets a job at a comedy club, but when his school and new job duties become too hard, he starts taking caffeine pills, with devastating results. In the meantime, Doris gets her first on-screen test for a commercial.

      Street Kid

      While researching for a role as a teenage streetwalker, Doris (VALERIE LANDSBURG) is shocked to find a girl her own age actually plying the world's oldest profession. Determined to get her off the street, Doris "adopts" her and arranges an audition at the School of the Arts. Unfortunately, the young woman doesn't possess the talent to pass the rigid requirements and is not admitted.Doris fears that the rejection will send the girl back to the street, but the girl reveals that the care and affection she has received from Doris and her friends has convinced her to abondon prostitution and return home to her parents.

      The Strike

      The School Of The Arts is plagued by a teachers' strike. Coco is upset because she wasn't chosen for the part of Desdemona in the schools musical version of "Othello". Once the teachers go on strike though she decides that instead of being angry, and not be apart of the production, she organizes everything so that the show can go on without Miss Grant's help. Bruno feels he needs to have Mr. Shorofsky's opinion on the music for the show because he thinks it should have a different tempo and style to it. Because of the strike he can't get Mr. Shorofsky's opinion and goes with his instinct, which turns out to be for the best. Once Leroy was cast for the part of Othello, he was having problems speaking the way the script was written. So he asks for Miss Sherwood's help to make him speak the way Shakespeare was meant to be spoken, even from someone from the Bronx.

      The Sell-Out

      When Angelo Martelli accidentally destroys Bruno's synthesizer, the penitant father gladly pays a hefty sum to replace the instrument.although delighted by the show of generosity, Bruno also senses the massive financial strain the gift imposed on his father. Detemined to help shoulder the monetary burden, Bruno swallows his pride and auditions for and wins a job playing accordion for a tacky dance band specializing in weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Polka parties.

      Kathleen Murphy's (CONNIE NEEDHAM) hopes for auditioning with a respected national dance company are temporarily dashed when she injures herself. Those hopes later seem permanently extinguished when the administration learns she has multiple sclerosis and, for insurance reason, must bar her from dance studies. Determined not to let the handicap block her desires, Bridget brilliantly sidesteps the red tape, thus enabling her to audition and land an interview with the dance company.

      Alone in a Crowd

      Bruno's (LEE CURRERI) fear of performing before an audience clashes with Coco's (ERICA GIMPEL) intense desire to audition their band for the Seventh Annual School of the Arts Benefit. Sidestepping his refusal to play, Coco auditions a tape of the group for the Acceptance Committee and wins a spot in the show. Confronted with this fait accompli, Bruno still refuses to play, but does agree to lend his equipment. On the night of the show, a power failure plunges the rented stage into darkness. Sensing his responsibility to his fellow students, Bruno abandons his fears and plays acoustic piano while the dancers execute a stunning number by candlelight. Confidence is instilled in him when applause greets him when the lights come back up.

      Tomorrow's Farewell

      After a 10 year absence, Leroy's ex-con brother suddenly reappears, expecting to be fed and housed. Leroy dutifully takes him in, but the extreme differences in life styles, and more importantly, life goals, imposes a tremendous strain on the relationship. His brother's presence proves to be detrimental to the young dancer, and Leroy nearly lands in jail after disposing of his brother's pistol. Finally, Leroy must make the heartwrenching decision of what is most important to him, his art or his family. He chooses art, and his brother walks out, forever

Rejection provides them both with a more realistic outlook and forms an even stronger student-teacher bond having shared adversity.
