Chico and the Man debuted in 1974 on NBC. The setting was East Los Angeles in a small rundown garage. The owner, Ed Brown (Jack Albertson), became partners in the business with a young Chicano, Chico Rodriguez, memorably played by rising comic Freddie Prinze. Major changes occured toward the end of the third season when Freddie Prinze committed suicide. Raul Garcia (Gabriel Melgar) was introduced at the beginning of the fourth and final season as the new "Chico". Other characters include Louie Wilson (Scatman Crothers), Della Rogers (Della Reese), Mabel (Bonnie Boland) and Aunt Charo (Charo).

Ed Brown, a hard drinking widower, has gradually become an island in his East Los Angeles automobile repair shop. His cantankerous nature and pessimism have alienated most of his neighbors, so he's very surprised when a young barrio resident named Chico walks in looking for work. Ed distrusts Chicanos, so he sends the young man packing, but Chico sneaks back in later. He cleans the garage and finds himself a place to sleep; when Ed sees this he concedes that Chico just might have some redeeming qualities, after all, and grudgingly agrees to hire him.
