Chicago Hope

An absorbing medical series set in a top-flight Chicago hospital that focuses on the personal and professional trials and tribulations of its medical staff. Created by David E. Kelley, Chicago Hope debuted in September 1994 on CBS, opposite another new hospital drama, ER. While never as popular as its NBC competition, the edgy ensemble series did receive a steady stream of Emmy nominations (and the occasional win) and remained on the air for six seasons, despite many cast changes. The show starred Mandy Patinkin as Dr Jeffrey Geiger, a hotshot surgeon with emotional issues stemming from the psychiatric condition of his wife (Kim Greist). Adam Arkin played Patinkin's colleague and best friend, and Peter MacNicol and Hector Elizondo featured as house counsel and director of medicine, respectively. Christine Lahti joined in the second season as a talented cardiac surgeon who vies with Geiger for the chief of surgery position.
