ALF

ALF , which stands for Alien Life Form, is a popular sitcom about a furry alien from the planet Melmac who lands on Earth and finds a home with the Tanners, a Southern California family. The family names him ALF and comes to rely on his wacky wisdom, which is unsurprising since he was born in 1756. The show was based on a Saturday morning cartoon series. ALF finds out that the cost of his upkeep is so high that the Tanners can't afford to send Lynn (Andrea Elson) to the college of her choice. To remedy this situation, ALF gets himself a paper route. Unfortunately, the sight of a furry alien delivering papers may be a bit too much for the public to take, so the rest of the Tanner household is forced to assume his duties. This is the final episode of ALF's second season.

Fed up with having to stay in hiding, ALF fantasizes about revealing his presence to the world. In his dreams, ALF serves a guest host on David Letterman's late-night NBC talkfest (replete with typical "Dave-isms"), while the Tanners plan a party celebrating his "emergence." Featured as ALF's TV guests are several of the people to whom he's revealed himself in the past—as well as Sandy Duncan, playing herself.

Dorothy Lyman guest stars as Maura Norris, an old friend of Kate Tanner (Anne Scheeden)—and an alcoholic. Though Maura insists that she's cured, ALF realizes that this is far from the truth. To save Maura from herself and make her face up to her problem, ALF pretends to be a "DT" vision - specifically, the ugliest pink elephant in history!

ALF purchase a mail-order ventriloquist's dummy, which he christens "Paul" (as in Paul Fusco?) Of course, ALF hopes to become a expert voice-thrower—but as it turns out, "Paul" exerts a demonic power upon ALF and completely takes over his personality! In hopes of reversing this Twilight Zone-ish situation, Willie (Max Wright) solicits the aid of Larry the psychologist (Bill Daily).

Willie (Max Wright) has gotten a promotion that will require him to move his family to San Diego. Not wishing to be left behind, ALF convinces himself that it is in the Tanners' best interest to keep them in San Francisco. Thus it is that he conjures up a few "ghosts" to convince potential buyers of the Tanner home that the joint is haunted.

Having long subscribed to a philosophy of pacifism, Willie Tanner (Max Wright) tries to reason with Mr. Duncan (Martin Doyle), the father of the schoolyard bully who has been picking on Brian (Benji Gregory). But when Duncan proves to be an even bigger bully than his kid, Willie is spoiling for a fight. Obligingly, self-appointed trainer ALF offers his services to whip "Boom Boom" Tanner into shape for the inevitable fistic showdown.

ALF is jealous of the stray dog that Brian (Benji Gregory) has brought home with him. Refusing to be upstaged by another furry creature (and a cuter one at that), ALF hands the dog over to a nasty old woman who claims to be the real owner—then must do some quick thinking to get the mutt back. Crotchety Ethel Buttonwood is played by Anne Ramsey of Goonies and Throw Momma From a Train fame, while the role of Vince is played by the actress' real-life husband Logan Ramsey.

Andrea Covell appears as Jody, a blind girl befriended by ALF. After inviting Jody to stay with the Tanners, ALF switches gears and decides to run away from home and move in with the girl instead. The well-meaning alien also appoints himself Jody's "protector"—little realizing that the girl is thoroughly adjusted to being sightless in a sighted world.

In the conclusion of a two-part story, ALF and a burglar confront each other in the Ochmoneks' living room. Before long, the local neighborhood-watch group has formed a circle around the house, and the police have been summoned. Unfortunately, the cops are convinced that ALF is the criminal, and that he has taken hostages to boot! It is up to Willie (Max Wright) to dodge the bullets of a SWAT team to save the hapless alien (who hopes that he can stay alive long enough to finish his pizza).

Someone To Watch Over Me: Part 1

After the Ochmoneks' home is robbed, a neighborhood-watch group is formed, using the Tanner garage as headquarters. Figuring that he'd better take charge of things, ALF inadvertently sends the group scurrying off in several wrong directions thanks to his false alarms. But circumstances are considerably altered when ALF confronts a prowler in the Ochmoneks' living room. This is the first episode of a two-part story.

We're So Sorry, Uncle Albert

Legendary tough-guy actor Elisha Cook Jr. appears as Uncle Albert, Willie's least favorite relative. Paying a visit to the Tanners, the irascible Albert insists that he's undergone a character transformation and is now a sweetheart. But no one will ever know if this is true: After taking one look at ALF, Albert drops dead of a heart attack! All of this has a remarkable effect on ALF, who, though he's perpetrated a lot of mischief in the past, has up until now never actually killed anyone.

With his reputation preceding him, ALF is the most likely suspect when a football crashes through the Ochmoneks' window. Protesting his innocence, ALF demands to be put on trial before a jury of his peers—and failing that, a jury of the Tanners. All he needs to clear himself is a witness—a neat trick, in that very few Earthlings are even aware that ALF exists.

Josh Blake joins the cast as Jake, the troubled 15-year-old nephew of Trevor and Raquel Ochmonek (John LaMotta, Liz Sheridan). The son of a jailbird and a klepto, Jake upholds family tradition when he breaks into the Tanners' garage. Here he meets and befriends ALF, who has at last found a kindred spirit: Another misunderstood misfit, far from home. And besides, Jake proves most handy in repairing everything ALF breaks—and that's plenty!

ALF is accidentally tossed into a box containing Christmas gifts. The box is delivered to a hospital, where ALF becomes the special present of a terminally ill little girl named Tiffany (Kerri Houlihan). Though fond of the girl, ALF is anxious to get back to the Tanners—but it isn't going to be easy! In his efforts to escape, he is trapped in an elevator with a woman (Molly Hagan) about to give birth. And to top it off, he saves a disgruntled Santa's helper (Cleavon Little) from committing suicide! Not surprisingly, ALF ends up learning the true meaning of Christmas and is reunited with the Tanners.

Although it's not an election year, ALF is bombarding Kate (Anne Scheeden) with questions about the American electoral process. Before long, both parties receive a crash course in civics when Kate dreams that she and ALF are opposing Presidential candidates. Veteran political interview John McLaughlin plays himself (as if anyone else could play him!) This episode was originally scheduled to air on November 30, 1987.

With the help of the Tanner children, ALF tries to remedy this situation by arranging the couple's second honeymoon. This undertaking involves the re-creation of Kate and Willie's first trip to Niagara Falls — in their backyard.

Versatile character actor Tracey Walter delivers another delightfully antisocial characterization as veteran hobo Gravel Gus—who thought he'd seen everything until he laid eyes on ALF!

ALF is barred from attending the wedding party of Grandma Dorothy (Anne Meara) and her new hubby Whizzer (Paul Dooley). As a result, he comes down with a bad case of the dreaded "Melmacian hiccups", for which there are only two cures: a healthy dose of cat-juice, and something so awful that ALF shudders at the thought of it. Reluctant to stuff their pet cat Lucky into the blender for the sake of ALF's health, Willie (Max Wright) and Kate (Anne Scheeden) resort to an adroit bit of trickery.

After losing the latest in a long line of boyfriends, Lynn (Andrea Elison) is convinced that she's too homely to attract men. ALF is determined to boost Lynn's self-esteem, and to do this he enters her in a beauty contest. Of course, he neglects to inform Lynn that he's done this, and the results aren't quite what he (or anyone else) expects.

A squirrelly ALF decides to make his presence known to the neighborhood by crashing the Tanners' Halloween party. Fortunately, everyone is in costume, so ALF is assumed to be one of the guests, dressed up in an alien outfit. Although ALF is the hit of the evening, Willie (Max Wright) worries that the Melmaccian's presence will spoil his chances for a job promotion.

When ALF's favorite TV series "Polka Jamboree" is threatened with cancellation, he decides to do something about. First, he arranges for the Tanners to become a Nielsen-ratings family. And second, he tries to "fix" the Nielsens throughout America so that his pet show will top the charts. Although NBC president Brandon Tartikoff would play himself in a subsequent ALF episode, he is herein portrayed by David Leisure of "Joe Izuzu" fame.

ALF is shocked to discover that his parents lied to him when they told him they weren't married at the time of his birth. It seems that back on Melmac, it was a disgrace to have been born "in wedlock" — and ALF is dutifully disgraced. Deciding to retreat from the world and "contemplate life's vicissitudes", ALF enters a monastery, where his fellow monks accept his presence, furry body and all.

Raquel Ochmonek (Liz Sheridan) finally catches a glimpse of ALF, but hubby Trevor (John LaMotta) refuses to believe her. Later, Raquel reveals what she's seen to the audience of a TV talk show—and THEY refuse to believe her. At this point, Raquel is beginning to doubt her own sanity, forcing ALF to take matters in hand and convince her that she's not crazy.

Season Two of ALF begins with the titular Melmacian alien being banished to the family garage by his Earthling "hosts", the Tanners. Begging for a second chance, ALF promises to be good for a whole week—and if he doesn't keep his promise, the Tanners can exile him to the garage forever. While the Tanners have trouble adjusting to ALF's personality change (or, for that matter, believing it!), ALF himself works overtime to prove he's turned over a new leaf...with such disastrous results as a kitchen explosion straight out of a Laurel and Hardy comedy!
